Bruce's body of work has encompassed oil and acrylic painting; digital, 35mm and large format still photography; computer imaging; video; sublimation dye imaging on metals, fabric and other materials; sculpture in soapstone, metal and wood; jewellery design. He has pioneered new imaging technologies and continues to be an innovator. A life-long naturalist, Bruce grew up in Ottawa, constantly involved in the National Museum of Canada and in Scouting. He had his first photographic darkroom before he was a teenager. His graphic and photographic images have been published since 1959 when he was a student member of an archaeological expedition to the Yukon Territory. Among his career enterprises, he has owned a graphics company in Toronto, providing imaging on brass and other media. His clients include many major corporations as well as individual commissions. With the availability of the personal computer, he entered the software development field, including multimedia design. In 2007 he led the Great FASD Horseback Ride and Trek across Canada, from Halifax to Victoria, photographing the country from coast to coast. Many of those images are becoming mixed media acrylic paintings. His gallery in Bright's Grove is open by appointment.
Mixed media combines two or more art forms into a single expression of the artist's intent. The paintings shown here are based on original photographs taken by the artist. In this case, the mixed media art begins with photography and evolves into a painting. "Photography" comes from the Greek words meaning "painting with light". The old masters, including Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, used "camera obscura" which is a lens and a mirror set at an angle with tracing parchment over it. Using the technology of the day, the old masters strove to create art as accurate as photographic reality. Technology provides the tools, but it is the artist who creates the image. Bruce's original images are digitized and edited using computer imaging tools in the same manner as traditional darkroom techniques, paintbrushes, airbrush, pallet knife, pencils, charcoal, conté crayon and pastels. The mixed media painting is created in archival pigments and acrylics on archival canvas. Taking advantage of ambient light transmission, reflection, refraction and the Fresnel effect, the acrylics range from opaque to transparent to bas relief depth to give the image a rich, 3D texture and appearance. These mixed media paintings are each unique, original and individually signed by the artist. |
